On June 26, 1945, representatives of 50 nations signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco — a gathering made possible in part by the remarkable logistical achievement of moving diplomats, staff, and documents across the globe by air in the postwar world. Aviation was rapidly becoming the backbone of international diplomacy.
The founding of the United Nations in 1945 coincided with a critical period in aviation history. The Chicago Convention of November 1944 had just established the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), creating the international framework for air navigation, safety standards, and aviation law that governs commercial flight to this day.
ICAO set the standards that allow a pilot trained in the United States to fly an aircraft built in France to an airport in Japan and communicate seamlessly with air traffic controllers along the way. It established the phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie...), standardized instrument approaches, and created the global airspace system.
The connection between aviation and international cooperation is profound. No other mode of transport touches as many nations simultaneously, requires as much international coordination, or does as much to make the world smaller and more connected. Aviation is diplomacy in action.
