June 29, 1995: Space Shuttle Atlantis Docks with Mir — Aviation Reaches Across the Cold War

On June 29, 1995, Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian Mir space station — the first docking between an American and Russian spacecraft since the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. It was a powerful symbol of post-Cold War cooperation in aerospace, and a milestone in international spaceflight history.

The Shuttle-Mir program (1995-1998) brought American astronauts to live and work aboard the Russian space station for extended periods, and Russian cosmonauts flew aboard Space Shuttle missions. Seven American astronauts completed long-duration stays on Mir, conducting science experiments and gaining the experience in long-duration spaceflight that NASA needed for the International Space Station.

For aviation and aerospace historians, the docking of Atlantis with Mir represents something profound: two superpowers that had spent 50 years competing in space, spending hundreds of billions of dollars to outrace each other beyond the atmosphere, had decided to work together instead. The ISS that followed was the direct result.

The Space Shuttle was itself an aviation marvel — a winged spacecraft that launched like a rocket and landed like an airplane. Its pilots — all military aviators — flew an unpowered glider approach at hypersonic speeds and landed on a runway with no ability to go around if they misjudged. There were no second chances.

Atlantis and Mir docked and showed the world what cooperation could achieve. At Cleared4Tees, we celebrate every mission that pushed further.
