On May 12, 1926, the airship Norge — carrying explorer Roald Amundsen, engineer Umberto Nobile, and American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth — became the first confirmed aircraft to fly over the North Pole, completing a spectacular transpolar journey from Spitsbergen to Alaska.
The Norge was a semi-rigid airship designed by Italian engineer Umberto Nobile and specially modified for Arctic conditions. The journey covered 5,456 miles in 70 hours, crossing the North Pole and ultimately landing in Teller, Alaska. It was a triumph of airship engineering and exploration spirit.
Roald Amundsen, already famous as the first man to reach the South Pole, used the Norge expedition to cement his place as one of history's greatest explorers. The flight also triggered a rivalry between Amundsen and Nobile that would lead to another Arctic airship expedition — the ill-fated Italia — just two years later.
Airships occupy a unique and romantic place in aviation history. From the great Zeppelins of pre-war Germany to the Navy blimps of World War II and the modern surveillance blimps of today, these lighter-than-air craft have always captured the imagination.
Amundsen proved the sky had no limits — and neither do the stories we wear. At Cleared4Tees, exploration is in every thread.
